"Octopus's Garden" lyrics

"Octopus's Garden"

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus's garden in the shade

I'd ask my friends to come and see
An octopus's garden with me
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade

We would be warm below the storm
In our little hideaway beneath the waves
Resting our head on the sea bed
In an octopus's garden near a cave

We would sing and dance around
Because we know we can't be found
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade

We would shout and swim about
The coral that lies beneath the waves
(Lies beneath the ocean waves)
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing they're happy and they're safe
(Happy and they're safe)

We would be so happy you and me
No one there to tell us what to do
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden with you
In an octopus's garden with you
In an octopus's garden with you

Writer(s): Richard (ringo Starr) Starkey
This song was one of two songs Ringo Starr wrote for The Beatles, another one being "Don't Pass Me By".
Ringo Starr drew the inspiration for this song from a tale he heard from the captain of the boat during his trip to Sardinia in 1968, when he took a short break from the recording sessions.
The idea behind the song was how great it would be to live with friends in the calm waters in contrast to the conflicts and animosity in the band at that time.
George Harrison helped Ringo to re-write the chord sequence during the "Let It Be" sessions. They are seen working on it in the movie "Let It Be".
Jim Henson's Muppets performed this song several times in various episodes of their shows partly because the lyrics are child-friendly.
Ringo Starr wrote a book "Octopus's Garden" (2014) for children. It's based on the song and includes a CD with a new version of the song.
The song is mentioned in the film "(500) Days of Summer" (2009) when Summer Finn (played by Zooey Deschanel) says that "Octopus's Garden" is the greatest Beatles' song. Her boyfriend Tom Hanson tells that no one loves Ringo Starr, and Summer responds, "That's what I love about him."
